Of Value

Happy Sunday Everyone-

One of my favorite quotes that I’ve mentioned previously is from Peter Drucker to Jim Collins: “Don’t focus on being successful. Focus on being useful.” It’s hard to summarize life more simply than that.

When I was in Vegas last week at the workshop I attended, the speaker kept repeating a phrase that stuck with me: “I want to be of value.” It made me think about the difference between being valuable and being of value.

Being valuable is often external, titles, results, recognition, productivity. Being of value is internal, how you show up, how you serve, how you impact the people in front of you.

Being valuable isn’t bad. We all want to matter in our roles, as spouses, parents, friends, leaders, teammates. But being of value feels deeper. Imagine walking into every conversation, every relationship, every situation with one simple intention: “How can I be of value here?” To Kim, to Jack and Thomas, to family, colleagues, friends, and even strangers.

I’m stealing the phrase, “being of value”. I want to walk through life being of value.  The alternative is no bueno.

Have a great rest of your Sunday!
